Being a wedding photographer is a labor of love, literally and figuratively. That’s doubly true when I’m photographing my own family.  My cousin Mike and his beautiful and creative bride Sarah were married this summer in a gorgeous outdoor ceremony just outside of Ithaca, NY, and I was honored to be their photographer. In a way it was the continuation of a family tradition.  Mike’s grandfather was a talented photographer whose B&W landscapes hung in my house when I was growing up and who photographed my brother’s bar mitzvah.

After the vows, everyone headed over to The Silver Queen Farm for great food, music and dancing.  This was the first barn reception I’ve shot, and it’s easy to see why barns are all the rage for weddings right now. The relaxed, friendly setting matched the warm, open personalities of the bride and groom, and there was plenty of room for kicking up our heels. The groom and his mom (my cousin Marlaine) cut the “rug” to shreds.

For all of us, one of the big highlights of the evening was when Sarah’s father gave a surprise performance of Dylan’s Forever Young. There was not a dry eye in the house (but I kept the blur behind the lens, I swear).

Welcome to the clan, Sarah.

And for the record: it’s very difficult to take a selfie with a professional dSLR camera.
